Melissa Fleming, Sea Chang, 17 unique palladium print, 2011
Standing in the ocean holding light-sensitive paper in the break of a wave, Melissa Fleming makes visible the ever-present and continuously changing trace of the water and the sediment carried within. Each palladium-based photogram becomes a unique document of the movement of matter within an individual ocean wave, referencing its complex character.
Exploring the interplays between realism and abstraction, and art and science, Fleming evokes the transient and often unseen aspects of the natural world. Her work has been exhibited and collected internationally. Fleming’s art is included in the permanent collections of the University of Colorado at Boulder; the Museo de la Fotografía in Rafaela, Argentina; the James Hotel Corporation; the Federal Reserve Bank of New York; and numerous private collections.
